? Opening Document

– Open Top_Level_Assy_1.scdoc

– There should be six solids and two components in the Structure tree.

– Solids under the same component will be sent to
ANSYS as a multibody part provided that the share topology property is set to true.

? Hiding Components

– Select the blue center solid. Right click in
white space and hide the component.

– Notice that you do not need to imprint edges from one body to another to have a multi-body part. It will be created automatically if the solids are in the same component and the property is set.

– Click on the Top_Level_Assy component and
go to the properties panel in the lower left hand corner of the screen. Change the Share Topology property to True. Do this for the two midsurface components as well.

? Show all components

– Right click on screen and click Show All to make
all of the parts visible.

Go to the right side of the Prepare tab and click the ANSYS button to send the objects into workbench.

– Note: Only the visible objects will be sent to
ANSYS.

? Meshing the solids

– Go to the Active simulation project in ANSYS Workbench, and add a meshing box to the –
geometry. Click on update project, then double click on model.

– Go to the Active simulation project in ANSYS
Workbench, and add a meshing box to the geometry.

– Expand the Model in the structure tree. All of the
solids are under the same component so they will be recognized as a multi body part and use shared topology. Right click on Mesh and choose Generate Mesh.

? Closer look at the mesh

– Select the center solid and right click to hide the
body.

– Notice that the mesh has been formed around those
solids that used to be there and which were hidden by the first part.

– Also notice that the top face has been split into
regions in order to use shared topology.

– Note: No imprinting of edges needs to be done in
SpaceClaim to make this occur. Parts need to be in the same component with the property turned on.

? Preventing Multi Bodies

– Go back to SpaceClaim and select the
Bearing part on the tree.

– Drag it down in order to put this part out of
the Multi Bodies part.

– Note: The bearing part (blue part) is now
independent and no longer linked with the Top_Level_Assy Assembly.

? Remeshing the Model

– Go back to Workbench and select on model
in the structure tree. Right click on Geometry and choose Refresh Geometry.

– Notice that bearing now exists as its own
component.

– Right click on Mesh and Generate Mesh.

? Examining the Mesh

– Hide the bearing and notice that the small
components are no longer split

– Hide the plug on top of the model to see
that the solids that are still under the same component (as well as the midsurfaces) are still using shared topology.

– Note: To make a multi body part the
solids need to exist in the same component with the shared topology property set to true.

? Conclusion

– Shared Topology is passed from SpaceClaim
to ANSYS when the shared topology property is set to true.

– Solids or surfaces under the same
component will be treated as a multibody part and will use shared topology.

– To prevent shared topology from occurring
place solids into individual components.
